"The Worst Passions of her Citizens were Aroused..."

How the Civil War Sparked Civilian War in Nodaway County

“It wasn’t always safe then for a man to say too much of what he thought.”

“Grandma” Jackson, 1905

Southern Sympathizers

Many of Nodawy County's early settlers were Amercians from the Upper South. They brought with them Southern culture and pioneer temperment, a potent combination that provided fuel for conflict.

Northern Sympathizers

Many early pioneers were Northerners, arriving from states like Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. These settlers, too, were resolute pioneers who maintained a strong loyalty for the United States.
