Pickering Horse Show
The Pickering Horse Show began in Pickering, Missouri on October 13th, 1934. As the story goes, a group of townsmen got together at Alva Lett's drugstore. and decided that Pickering needed a horse show. It is unknown who these townsmen were, or why Pickering was chosen for the horse show. This informal agreement meant that there was not an official governing board during the first year that the event was held. The horse show became an annual event except during 1942-1945 due to WWII.
Horsemanship is central to the Pickering Horse Show, but events such as track meets, talent shows, and agricultural displays have made the event more inclusive. The horse show has become a huge event and has horse entries from across Missouri and neighboring states such as Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas. The Pickering Horse Show Association is a member of the Four Rivers Horse Show Circuit which organizes competitions in the Grand, Platte, 102, and Nodaway River areas. This event, so important to the town of Pickering has become the "biggest little horse show in the world."
