Medals and Ribbons

A common form of accoutrements for the United States Armed Forces is the ribbon. Ribbons are given based on set criteria, which vary based on how common the award is. The decoration may also be awarded in another form: the medal. Medals are not commonly worn on a uniform but are more often used as decoration.

National Defense Service Medal
One of the most common medals awarded in the United States Armed Forces is the National Defense Service Medal. It was first awarded in the 1950s during the Korean War. This medal is awarded to any member of the military who served during a time of war, even if the service was not overseas.

Navy Occupation Service Medal, World War 2

The Navy Occupation Service Medal and Ribbon were created to recognize sailors who served in occupation forces in Europe and the Pacific during World War II and its aftermath. Marines and Coast Guardsmen were also able to receive this medal. The Army had its own separate, but similar, award.

Republic Of Vietnam Campaign Medal

The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medals were issued in 1966 by the Republic of Vietnam. Members of the United States Armed Forces and other foreign troops were able to receive this award if they served for 6 months in Vietnam. Troops were also eligible if they were wounded, captured, or killed in action during the conflict.
