Rank

Rank is important in the United States Armed Forces, which rely on hierarchy to function. In the Army, ranks are divided into two groups: enlisted and officers. Enlisted rank insignias are shaped like chevrons, while officers have a variety of symbols in silver and gold. The rank of private is the lowest and the most common. Generals are among the highest ranking soldiers.

Although the ranks in each branch may seem similar to one another, each branch uses its own system of rank. The Army, Marines, and Air Force use many of the same names for their ranks. The same is true for the Navy and Coast Guard. For example, one rank in the Navy is lieutenant commander, which is equivalent to a major in the Army. These two titles represent the first officer rank in their respective branches. Both ranks share the same insignia.
