How Are You Feeling Today?

The history of health, medicine, and medical practices in this country have changed dramatically over the past two centuries. This northwestern part of Missouri has a long medical history, including the practices of Indigenous peoples prior to the arrival of white settlers, who then created their own medical traditions. This site presents the history of health and medicine in Nodaway County. Featured here is the creation of the local hospital, with its origins in the Catholic Church and a group of nuns. While some people used scientific models of the hospital, other people looked for other approaches. The community of Burling Junction once bustled with its popular mineral springs, just one of many across the state that were promoted for their medicinal purposes. Home remedies also were used regularly by local residents for many decades. You may still rely on some home remedies even today!
