Dress and Deployment
Iraqi Freedom
The Boonie hat used today is much like the one from Vietnam. It is still used in the warm weather of the Middle East. The only change from the Vietnam version is the color. This hat, just like the uniform, is six-colored desert camo. Boonie hats can come in many different camos so that they can match the landscape and the uniform.
Dan Snowdall wore this six-colored desert camo uniform. The desert camo today is much like the camo used in the 1990s. This is an Army uniform, but all of the military branches wear it now when they are in the Middle East.
The Army has changed their uniforms to a gray tone digital camouflage pattern, much like those that the Marines are wearing. The digital camo is meant to be worn in all kinds of battle and is easier to see through night vision goggles, with the goal of limiting friendly fire. Another way that the military is preventing friendly fire is by creating an infrared American flag so it can be seen more easily through night vision goggles.
