Dress and Deployment
Vietnam 1954-1975
Color Change

In the years between Korea and Vietnam, the Army changed their colors from olive drab to Army green in shade forty-four. This became the mandatory dress in September 1961. The photograph below is of a dress uniform and was not used in combat.
Hats in the Vietnam Era

There were two styles of hats used during Vietnam. The one featured below is the service cap. It changed between the wars in Korea and Vietnam. The Vietnam service cap had a visor, with a flat top and the insignia on the front. The cap was meant to be worn in the summer and with the Army green uniform. This cap also had a strap to keep it in place. The cap was made to be shade forty-four green to match the uniform.
The Boonie hat was introduced during the Vietnam War. This hat had a broad rim all around and was used in the warm weather of Vietnam and to protect the face from the sun. The hat has been used in the military from Vietnam to present day in the conflicts in the Middle East.
