Objects of World War II: The European Front
Volkssturm Armband
With the Allies closing in, Hitler created the Volkssturm (the civilian militia) as part of Germany's last stand. Mostly made up of scared
16 year old boys and men pushing 60, this hastily put together unit never stood a chance against the battle hardened soldiers of the Allied forces.
Kuban Shield
This medal was dedicated to German soldiers who fought and managed to hold the line at the Kuban Bridge in the Caucasus Mountains. This action managed to secure the German advance into the Soviet Union during their initial push.
War Merit Cross with Swords
This medal was created by Hitler personally in order to reward acts of bravery committed by people who were not in the military. Despite being created by Hitler, this medal was not as desired as the Iron Cross and was only seen as a stepping stone to it.
Kar 98k Mauser
Generally chambered in 8mm rounds, the Kar 98k was the standard German rifle and the go to weapon alongside the MP40. The rifle was immensely popular due to its high level of customization, particularly when it came to scopes. Add to this the fact that the weapon only cost the equivalent of $294 in 1939 and this rifle saw itself in the hands of most German soldiers.
Staff Sergeant Walter Nicholson
Walter Nicholson brought back all of these items and many more from the European front of World War II. Nicholson did this for the express purpose of giving proof to what happened in Germany.
